CUV lamp is the abbreviation for a lamp emitting ultraviolet light. UV is the English abbreviation for an Ultra-Violet ray. A UV lamp is a gas discharge lamp. The gas discharge lamp includes arc discharge and glow discharge. UV lamps used in UV curing printing systems are arc discharge lamps. The working principle is that high purity mercury is brought under vacuum into the quartz tube. A high voltage difference is set to both end sides of the electrodes, producing an ion discharge. This will result in ultraviolet radiation. LED-UV light source is a new type of UV curing light. Compared with traditional lamps, its 60% energy saving is environmentally friendly and does not contain poisonous substances. LED lamps can be recycled and will work without maintenance for about 20,000 hours and longer. Compared with normal LED lamps, made by point light source, UV LED lamps have a good radiation effect, low attenuation and will truly achieve more than 20,000 hours. Since we start with just 70% of possible energy, the life time of the lamps should be extended to more than 100% or so. The light made by surface light source is easy to control regarding the irradiation angle.  LED-UV light source has many advantages: free of hazardous materials, low energy consumption, small volume, excellent performance, cost savings, enhanced durability: 1. Long life: the life time is about 10 times longer than the life time of a traditional mercury lamp. 2. Cold light source: No radiation, low temperature rising on surface, preventing thermal sensitive media from being damaged and will not heat up the environment. 3. Instant light: directly after switch-on full UV energy is available, no waiting or heat up time. 4. The life time of mercury lamps are shortened by switching on/off frequently, there is no such effect on UV-LED lamps. 5. Mercury lamps show instability regarding UV energy and wave length, LED UV lamps show stable light output. However, the radiated energy might decrease in a linear way over the life cycle. But since we start with 70% of the max. Power, we can compensate for this aging effect. 6. LED lamps have a stable and exactly defined wave length meaning ozone is not produced, therefore additional air cleaning devices are not requested. 7. Low energy consumption, the power consumption is only 10% of traditional mercury lamps so it can save 60% on electricity. 8. The maintenance costs of a UV-LED light source are almost zero. 9. The spectral range of traditional mercury lamp light source is wide, including UVA, UVB and UVC and is therefore potentially more harmful to operators. The prevention requirements are more stringent. UV-LED light source contains only narrowband UVA. 10. NO shutters: because LED lamps cycle on an off without any need for warm up and without intense heat emissions is therefore negates the requirement for shutters. Shutters, a notoriously problematic part of any UV printer due to the harsh conditions they work under, now eliminated and 100% reliable.
